New oak sleepers have a beautiful natural oak appearance. They bring style, character and a lovely rustic feel to landscaping and building projects.
Oak sleepers can be used in so many different ways - retaining walls, raised flower beds, rustic benches and so much more, check out these photos to give you some ideas of how they can be used.

Lifespan

One of the most compelling reasons to choose Oak sleepers over softwood alternatives is their lifespan. Pressure treated softwood will only have a lifespan of approximately 10 years and this can be considerably less in coastal locations. Whereas oak sleepers can last up to 80 years.

Cost

It used to be the case that oak sleepers were twice the price of softwood versions whereas now there is very little difference and for bulk purchases oak sleepers can actually work out cheaper.

The Environment

Our oak sleepers are untreated as the natural tannins are a better preservative than man-made alternatives. This gives them an advantage over reclaimed sleepers, which are treated with creosote that was banned by the EU in 2006 because it is carcinogenic which limits where these sleepers can be used.

Weight

An oak sleeper will weigh around twice as much as a softwood sleeper. This will make them harder to move around so they will remain in place better and will require less fixings.

Appearance

Oak sleepers will develop a subtle silver appearance over time; these pale tones will enhance the look of any garden.

4 great ideas for using oak sleepers in your garden

Raised Flower Beds

Raised beds can give a garden a focal point. They can also take a different soil and are of benefit for people with limited mobility. They also drain well and improve soil temperature for plants.

Furniture

Due to their long lifespan and resistance to the worst effects of weather, oak sleepers make a great material for robust and rustic outdoor furniture. Interesting benches or tables can be made. They need minimum maintenance and don’t even need to be covered up for winter, simply leave them where they are and a quick clean come the spring and they will be ready to be used again.

Decking

Oak sleepers offer a cost effective and robust alternative to traditional softwood as they reduce the need to add support underneath. The decking will also last for up to 80 years with minimal maintenance.

Hard Landscaping

Oak sleepers can make excellent retaining walls. All you need to do is ensure the sleepers are to the correct height then back fill with earth or gravel to give a firm fix. Because of their weight there’s no need for concrete or expensive brick walls and the job can be done in a weekend. The sleepers can also be used for steps or for border edging.
