Topsoil is the top layer of soil in which all plants grow. It contains all the nutrients that plants need to grow and thrive.
Topsoil can be used to create new flowerbeds and borders or to provide a base for laying turf or grass seed. Topsoil is ideal for growing healthy vegetables. When planting trees or shrubs, replacing the existing soil with topsoil will help plants grow better. The depth of topsoil for either a new lawn or plants should be between 4 and 6 inches deep.
Where you can use topsoil
Topsoil is the answer if your existing soil is poor, damaged or if there is no natural soil, such as a patio or paved area. Many new homes have poor soil because the natural topsoil has been striped away during construction. Topsoil can be used to cover the ground and create new flower beds and to provide a base for turf or seeding.
You can add topsoil to an existing lawn. Adding a layer of topsoil is called ‘top dressing’, this incorporate organics back into the soil which rejuvenates and invigorates new lawn growth, improving the look of your grass. Top dressing allows you to get a level lawn surface by filling in any imperfections or hollow areas to create a smooth surface. Top dressing should be done during the growing season and earlier in the season is the best time, generally late spring to early summer.
